What Is a Cantilever in Structural Design?
A cantilever is a beam that is supported at only one end while carrying a load over an open space on the other. In residential wall removal, a cantilever design is used when:
You cannot install posts directly under the beam end
You want a completely column-free opening
Existing foundation limitations prevent point-load posts
You want cleaner architectural lines in your open-concept space
An offset post location makes more sense for the layout
A cantilevered beam allows engineers to transfer the load sideways into a support that exists outside the opening—making the open space look clean and seamless.
When Is a Cantilever the Best Option?
Cantilevers are powerful solutions, but not needed in every project. Your engineer may recommend a cantilever when:
1. You want a wider opening than normal
Sometimes the planned opening exceeds the available space for posts. A cantilever allows a longer span with fewer supports.
2. Plumbing or HVAC interferes with post placement
If a post cannot be placed directly under the beam due to mechanical systems, the engineer may offset the post and use a cantilever to shift the load.
3. The homeowner wants a “post-free” or “hidden post” design
Cantilevering enables a clean, open look that improves the aesthetics of the space.
4. The foundation or basement layout prevents direct bearing
When the beam above cannot align with an appropriate load path below, cantilevering allows the load to be transferred elsewhere safely.
